Glow plug, also known as preheating plug, is an element that provides heat for engine starting.


When the diesel engine cools down during the cold period, the glow plug provides heat energy to improve starting performance. Meanwhile, the glow plug is required to have the characteristics of rapid temperature rise and lasting high temperature state.


There are several different types of glow plugs, the most widely used are: metal glow plugs, ceramic glow plugs. A glow plug is screwed into each combustion chamber of the engine. The glow plug shell has a glow plug resistance coil mounted in a tube. The current passes through the resistance coil, causing the tube to heat. The tube has a large surface area and can generate more heat energy. The inside of the tube is filled with insulating material to prevent the resistance coil from contacting the inner wall of the tube due to vibration. Due to the battery voltage (12 V or 24 V) and the electric heating device used, the rated voltage of each glow plug is different. Therefore, be sure to use the correct type of glow plug, using wrong glow plug will burn too early or insufficient heat.

Features of metal glow plugs


● Turn on the fast-preheating time: the temperature can reach more than 850 degrees Celsius in 3 seconds

● Post-heating time: after the engine is started, the glow plug maintains the temperature (850 degrees Celsius) for 180 seconds to reduce pollutants.

● Operating temperature: about 1000 degrees Celsius.

Features of ceramic glow plugs

● Preheating time: the temperature can reach more than 900 degrees Celsius in 3 seconds

● Post-heating time: after the engine is started, the glow plug maintains the temperature (900 degrees Celsius) for 600 seconds to reduce pollutants.

● Operating temperature: about 1150 degrees Celsius.

● Preheating time: the temperature can reach more than 1000 degrees Celsius in 3 seconds

● Post-heating time: after the engine is started, the glow plug maintains the temperature (1000 degrees Celsius) for 180 seconds to reduce pollutants.

● PWM signal control

The Diesel Engine Starts The Glow Plug


In many diesel engines, automatic temperature control glow plugs are used. This glow plug is equipped with a heating coil, which is actually composed of three coils: a blocking coil, an equalizing coil and a fast-heating coil, and the three coils are connected in series. When current is passed through the glow plug, the temperature of the fast-heating coil at the tip of the glow plug rises first, causing the glow plug to glow. Because the resistance of the equalizing coil and the heating coil increases sharply with the temperature increase of the fast-heating coil, the current passing through the fast-heating coil is reduced, and the glow plug controls its own temperature in this way. Some glow plugs do not have equalizing coils installed due to their temperature rise characteristics.

The glow plug adopts a double-wire structure, which has a fast-heating speed and a long service life.


The shell and wiring screw are made of high-quality stainless steel 304, and the insulating powder is filled with high-temperature-resistant MGO powder for insulation treatment, so the surface insulation is not charged when the power is turned on and heated, and it is safe to use.


The seal ring is made of fluororubber rubber ring, which has excellent flame retardancy, air tightness, high temperature resistance, ozone resistance, climate resistance, oxidation resistance and fuel oil resistance.

The sheath is made of Japanese high temperature resistant stainless steel, which has excellent high temperature resistance, no oxidation, no deformation, "chlorine" corrosion resistance, and the maximum operating temperature can reach 1100 ℃.


The adjusting wire adopts German PTC thermal sensitive resistor.


The heating wire is made of Swedish high-quality metal resistance alloy heating element.

Maintenance And Care


The glow plugs of diesel vehicles do not have a regular replacement cycle. Only when a component fails or does not work properly, it needs to be inspected. After the inspection, if it cannot continue to be used, it needs to be replaced as a whole.



Normally, if the glow plug is broken, the electric heating indicator on the dashboard will be on all the time, or in low temperature weather, the engine is difficult to start, which may also be the failure of the preheating system. The glow plug is an important accessory of the ignition system of the car.
