BELT TENSIONER IDLER System

A special tension system is established to allow the timing belt or the timing chain to remain a suitable tension degree. That is to say, the device will not be not too loose to skip teeth or too tight to be damaged. It consists of a tensioner wheel or tensioner and a chain tensioner guide plate (chain guide). In the valve mechanism driven with synchronous belt, the tensioner wheel is in direct contact with the timing belt; the tension degree of timing belt can be changed by the adjustment of tensioner wheel position. In the valve mechanism driven with chain, the tensioner supplies pressure to the chain by the change of chain tensioner guide plate position so that the chain keeps an appropriate tension degree. The chain tensioner guide plate is in direct contact with the timing chain and plays a guiding role.

Tensioner

Tensioner and tensioner wheel serve as tension devices for the transmission system of valve mechanism in an engine. They act upon the timing chain or the timing belt of engine for guidance and tension so that both pats are always in optimum tension state during operation. The tensioner is a vulnerable part in automobiles. The timing belt in engines is easy to be elongated after long service time. The tensioner can automatically adjust the tension degree of timing belt so as to keep the belt from slipping and resulting in engine failure. Additionally, the tensioner allows the timing belt to run more smoothly and reduce the engine noise. If the tensioner fails, the engine will generate abnormal sound. This fault will even cause vehicle jitter and flameout, thus compromising the normal operation of automobiles. For replacement, it is best to replace both the timing belt and the timing chain so as not to avoid any hidden hazards. The tensioner wheel is generally divided into hydraulic and mechanical ways, and mainly composed of fixed enclosure, tension arm, wheel body, torsional spring, rolling bearing, spring sleeve, etc. It can adjust the tension automatically according to the tightness of the timing belt or the timing chain so that the transmission system operates in a stable, safe and reliable manner.

Faults and Hazards

1. How to judge if there is any fault in the belt tensioner.

Tensioner wheel serves as a kind of automobile tensioner for the transmission system of valve mechanism in engines to adjust the tightness of the timing belt / chain. A damaged tensioner wheel cannot adjust the belt tightness. At this moment, the engine will give abnormal sound, timing teeth skipping and gas distribution time disorder. It leads to car jitter, increased fuel consumption, weak acceleration, and other phenomena. In serious cases, it will even cause a vehicle to flame out and stop running, thus affecting its normal service.

2. Replace the tensioner regularly.

Generally, it is recommended to replace the tensioner wheel and the timing belt once each 3 to 5 years or about 80,000 to 100,000 kilometers. you can refer to the vehicle maintenance manual for its specific replacement time interval. The tensioner wheel should be replaced together with the timing belt.

3. Effects:

The tensioner is installed on the timing chain, the timing belt or the external auxiliary belt for guidance and tightening so that those components are always in their best tension state.

4. Category:

Oily hydraulic and mechanical types (Both can automatically adjust the tightness of those elements to be tensed.)

Maintenance Instructions

1. Disassembly

① Drive the vehicle onto the elevator.

② Disconnect the battery.

③ Remove the water pipe connector bracket.

④ Insert the 3/8" tool into the dedicated opening of belt tensioner, turn the automatic belt tensioner clockwise by a wrench, and loosen the auxiliary system belt of engine.

⑤ Loosen the fastening screws (1) or (2) according to the belt tension wheel to be dismounted.

2. Re-assembly

Reassemble all components previously removed in a reverse order against the removal procedure.

② Tighten the fastening screws (1) or (2) to a torque of 30 Nm.

③ Implement the remaining assembly procedures.

After assembly, test the device for its normal operation.
